Salamandraki

I found this little guy in my garden this morning. About 12cm long. He was moving slowly, seemed not too well...

I wanna help him out, but dunno what to do. Maybe he just woke up from a hibernation (do salamanders hibernate?).

What do salamanders eat? (is it really a salamander?)

answers (sort of)to your questions
1. not sure myself.
2. flies maybe?
3. whatever it is it looks nice.

did you keep it as a pet? if yes keep it out of your son's reach. its bad for little boys to eat salamnaders -and sure its bad for salamanders to be eaten by little boys...

Well you are not being very helpful now, are you?! (although the flies are a good guess).

I hope he'll want to keep me as a pet.

And nobody's going to be eating anybody, if I have anything to do with it (except the flies maybe...)

Fascinated. I did a search. It looks like a ocellated skink which are found here. I found a care sheet for them
skinks
too. Don't take my word for it though. Let us know what happens.

Thank you so much DD!

Yup, definitely an ocellated skink (Chalcides ocellatus according to Wikipedia).

I'll have to look for him (or her!) tomorrow morning, hope she's doing ok. I have a few cats crossing though the garden (the subject of a future post perhaps) and I don't want to think of the outcome of an encounter...

Omnivorous it says, so there should be plenty of decent food around...

I'll be sure to let you know how this goes! Poor creature... if all goes well we'll need to find a name too (not to mention another calchidaki to compare head sizes and conclude if its a salamandrinos or a salamandrina...)!

I love the little skink already. How about devious if it's a girl? Only joking! Let me know how she/he does!@

Devious? Hmmm... perhaps... What do you think, Sissy?

I think Diva would be too much, though, don't you agree?

But right now I'm more preoccupied about finding it in one piece in the morning, rather than names...

[ok, hitting the couch now]

No sign of the little rascal yet...

He's either lying under some patch of tall grass drinking a frappe' under the sun... or inside some cat's belly.

Fingers crossed...

Hey, I saw the little rascal this morning, hiding under some rocks. Seems to be doing ok...

Yay!

He'll be fine, Steph. It's no coincidence that he got that big and fat before you ever noticed him. He knows what he's doing. (Is it sexist of me to refer to it as a male?)

And thanks for trying to be inclusive, but I think I will abstain from participating in the discussion on the name, firstly because of the gender ambiguity, and secondly because names in general (but especially when there are issues of gender ambiguity) are a bit of a sensitive subject for me right now. You understand...
