A person who is nice to you but rude to a waiter, is not a nice person.

I totally agree.
After all there’s always the possibility that one could become a waiter at a point in his life, and that a waiter will not be one for ever.
And due to the fact that waiters can be kind or rude as well, God, invented tipping as a way of punishment or reward.
