And the wind cries Mary
(Image copied without permission from the BBC)
I heard this incident about how the first time Jimi Hendrix was ever broadcast live on radio was on a BBC Radio 3 classical music programme, in 1967, I think.
The story says that Hendrix was setting up the studio for a live BBC sessions recording, about 2 floors up from the BBC radio 3 studio that was broadcasting a classical music programme. Aparently, in order to set up his guitars and amps the way he wanted to, and to get the desired distortion and overdrive, he had to pump up the gain and volume to such an extent that the sound crossed the two floors into the BBC3 studio, and was actually heard by the audience who were calling the classical music producer to complain for the interference.
Is that cool, or what?
After all the jacks are in their boxes,
and the clowns have all gone to bed,
you can hear happiness staggering on down the street,
footprints dressed in red
and the wind whispers Mary
A broom is drearily sweeping,
up the broken pieces of yesterday's life
somewhere a queen is weeping,
somewhere a king has no wife
and the wind it cries Mary
The traffic lights they turn of blue tomorrow,
and shine their emptiness down on my bed,
the tiny island sails downstream,
cause the life that lived is is dead
and the wind screams Mary
Will the wind ever remember,
the names it has blown in the past,
and with this crutch it's old age and it's wisdom,
it whispers no this will be the last
and the wind cries Mary.

Excellent story from the... vaults, Steph... But... I wouldn't ever think of you as A Hendrix fan. You caught me by surprise...
Interesting...
But why? What would make you think of me as a fan of any group, or NOT a fan of any group?
I'm a Hendrix fan as much as I am a fan of Air, David Bowie, the Chemical Brothers, Death in Vegas, Porcupine Tree, Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Tim Booth, Philip Glass, Ry Cooder, JJ Cale, Madrugada, Nick Drake, not to mention Infected Mushroom, Keith Jarrett, Massive Attack, Apoptygma Berzerk, Moby, Marilyn Manson, The Pogues and Radiohead, to mention but a few.
Do any of the above seem more "me" (or e-me) than the others?
As I said, there's a LOT of good music out there!
Steph, kid.
I wanted at last to send you a comment to your very nice and varied blog stories, after we have been talking lots about it.
And, of course, I would choose the Hendrix story than anything else.
You know why? It's music, first of all, to which I am addicted, as you know very well. Then, it is him, his music, his style. For me Hendrix is passon impersonated. Let's remember him burning his guitar, in front of which he first knelt and made voodoo gestures with his hands above it, with such a grace and spirituality. And with such a magic feeling for music, which he praised.
For me, this guy also represents the ultimate sex appeal, by the way.
Steph, why don't you get us more stories from our favorite rock heroes who happens to be our life's heroes also?
With love and best regards,
your friend Kristin, an ex and future blogger
